Throughout my career, there have been many times when my determination and perseverance have waned. But when I feel like quitting, I think about famous people who persevered despite experiencing failure early in their careers. It helps me to dismiss my doubts and keep going.
There are so many examples of people who persevered after setbacks. Jim Carrey was booed off the stage at one of his first stand-up comedy shows. Stephen King’s novel, Carrie, was rejected 30 times before it was published. Oprah Winfrey was fired from one of her early jobs because, as she was told, she “wasn’t great for TV.”
When I imagine these different scenarios, I think about how much self-doubt these people must have felt, and how much determination and perseverance it must’ve taken for them to not give up on their dreams.
How did these highly successful people overcome self-doubt in the face of failure? And what would’ve happened if these particular people who persevered had given up instead?
Most likely, Oprah would not have gone on to inspire millions of TV viewers; readers of Stephen King novels would’ve missed out on dozens of books; and Jim Carrey wouldn’t have provided laughs and entertainment to millions of moviegoers.
Everyone experiences failure and self-doubt. The question is: how do you deal with it? Try to keep in mind some of the best examples of successful people who’ve shown determination and perseverance – and the benefits we all enjoy because of it.
Remember that failure is part of success. When you falter, pick yourself back up and keep on going.
