Horses, particularly cobs, are often sold as 'ride and drive' as they have had some previous driving experience. However, prospective owners should always be aware that just because a horse has been driven in certain circumstances or appears to be safe, that is not always the case. Change of driver, environment and expectations of it, can all cause the horse to 'go to pieces' in its driving and display behaviour it may not have done if it had been driven in the same manner as which it was broken to drive.
In this video, we look at Murphy - a cob who had driven with previous owners, although in a situation and style very different to what his new owners would like him to be comfortable with.
Listen as Barry explains the issues we had to overcome whilst training Murphy and how different expectations (for example, walking in heavy traffic rather than at a fast trot) can bring to light problems the horse has that would otherwise go unnoticed.
