3D Printing: Why does MakerBot Replicator heat the extruder and platform separately?

3D Printing: Why does MakerBot Replicator heat the extruder and platform separately? 3D Printing: Why does MakerBot Replicator heat the extruder and platform separately?

The Question: I am using a MakerBot Replicator 2x, and when it is heating the platform and
extruder, it begins by heating the platform, and then after that is at 110C it
goes on to heat the left extruder to 230C. Does anyone know why it does this,
since it has enough power to heat both? It seems like it would take less time
to heat both at once.
