Have you looked around and noticed that some people are not being the example of Jesus they should be? If we are not careful, we can make other people’s lives our standard, and when they make a mistake or fall, our faith falls with them. Why do we look to others when Jesus told us to look at him? I think it’s because we want to please others and be accepted. We look past the eternal acceptance of Jesus and self destructively settle for the latest role model that comes along with a dangling carrot. Jesus is our cornerstone and will always be there for us. There is another creation that does the same.
Did you know that the hermit crab, when it is ready to shed its shell, will go looking for another suitable shell on the shore? To survive, it will not leave it’s shell until it finds another one. But something really incredible happens when a group of hermit crabs comes together at the right time. As they size each other up, they line up in a row from small to large and wait for the largest crab to make the first move and leave its shell. As soon as the largest crab jumps out of its old shell into the new shell, the crabs behind it do the same until they all jump to the next larger shell. However, sometimes one crab gets left out if another bystander wants one of the shells out of the group.
Sometimes we like the crabs imitate the moves of another person in order to get a bigger shell. We want more status or comforts and will keep our eyes fixed on another person’s faith in order to get a bigger shell. And in the process, we get left behind. Instead of looking to others to build your faith, look to Jesus. Jesus Christ is the living Word of God and will never let you down. We can always imitate him in love by following his example. When the body of Christ gets focused, our eyes will be on Jesus. And when your eyes are on Jesus, he will give you the shell you need at the right time, which is the perfect home.
