Before and after (and NOT the other way around!) In the 8 weeks that I have spent in Bermuda, this bleached fire coral has returned to its glorious orange self ๐คBermuda is a special place for corals because the Fall and Winter water temperature cools down enough for them to recover ๐ช๐ผ๐ Sadly that's not how if works for most other coral reefs, but this does show how incredibly resilient and marvellous corals are and if they have the opportunity, they can recover ๐ “It’s not too late for coral reefs… indeed, for many other ecosystems that are facing challenges from climate change. It’s still possible to reduce the rate at which the climate is changing, and that’s within our power today.”
It's my last week in Bermuda and I was lucky enough to experience freediving on a beautiful coral reef in aquarium conditions!๐๐๐ I'm going to miss this place.... ๐
Freediving Camp for kids in Bermuda was such a success! Meet 13 year old Charlie and 11 year old Nash experiencing being underwater on one breath ๐They both dived down to 35ft on the course and they would have gone deeper if that wasn't the bottom! ๐๐ It's so incredible to teach and dive with such talented young freedivers and if they can do this now, imagine what's to come...
Happy Mermaid Monday! Exploring Bermuda's reefs on one breath is a magical experience, especially with my new
Freediving in Bermuda with my salty sister, Dr. Alex ๐ What am I doing on this bermudaful island? I'm here to teach a program called Kids on the Reef where we introduce young Bermudians to their underwater world for the first time and we give them the confidence that they need to explore and experience their reefs for the first time, and on one breath. We also teach them about their fish, corals and the many challenges facing our oceans and some solutions that they can be a part of to make a positive difference!
ommon dolphins on the Sardine Run ๐ It was a dream of mine to freedive with them and to hear them communicating... It's thanks to them that the Sardine Run happens and it was incredible to see them working the bait ball ๐ Thanks for the amazing opportunity to experience this ocean magic
This coral was bright orange when I was in Bermuda in Spring ๐It is now completely bleached and I was devastated, but apparently Bermuda's corals are better off than most other places because the Winter is cool enough to allow the corals to recover ๐ค I've also been told that Bermuda actually relies on hurricanes to bring cooler water so that the coral reefs have the chance to recover from Summer, but no hurricanes have hit the island and the water temperature is still really warm ๐Here is a great explanation of coral bleaching from @noaa "Warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality." -
