There's a lot of overlapping attributes and elements to game based learning and gamification, but they really aren't the same thing.

Gamification is an umbrella term. It means to take bits and pieces of games and use them in non-game settings. One of the things that motivates people to play games is the sense of progress. We also like to see progress on the outside of a game environment. Progress is a driver and a motivator and we can use that in gamification. When talking about gamification, don't think about creating an actual game, think about using the elements of gaming to drive motivation.

Game based learning is an entire system designed around a learning goal. Game based learning is where the activity of playing the game itself teaches the learner what they need to know as they go through the game. Game based learning has a defined middle, beginning and end.
