PPSEN Word Detective High Frequency Words - An Intensive Focus

PPSEN Word Detective High Frequency Words - An Intensive Focus This video accompanies the Word Detective activity available from my TES Shop; Phonics for SEN.

Word Detective enables the pupil to focus intensely on individual high frequency words to work towards reading and spelling automaticity, i.e. the ability to simply look at a word and say what it is or think about a word and write it down rapidly when spelling, apparently without effort or conscious thought.

Word Detective is a sequence of activities that incorporates orthographic mapping. When orthographic mapping takes place for a written word it becomes stored in long-term memory and is available for us to retrieve with automaticity. We could say that the word is placed in our bank of ‘sight words’ or words we can read automatically ‘by sight’.

Guided by the teacher or teaching assistant, the word is explored phonemically (at the individual phoneme or speech sound level), phonologically (at the syllable and onset / rime level and the sounds within them), visually (the form of single letters or letters in a sound spelling) and kinaesthetically (the experience of movement to form the letters by writing them).
