LESS products MORE services in Sustainability
Do you think it is a good idea to buy services instead of products?
Hi! I am Helke and I am here to talk about sustainable lifestyle
In fact, speaking no, talking! A chat between you and me!
Too much sun today, I have to put my glasses on! apologies!
I was talking about it yesterday, about the amount of services we have today, and it helps us not to buy a lot of things, a lot of products, if we start with transportation, public transportation, subway, train bus, VLT, ferries, and everything else. … But we can also rent bikes, electric bikes, motorbikes, scooters, so many things… to get around without buying anything… we can just use the service… Just as we use the electricity service, we don't buy the power generator, we only use electricity… In fact today we can buy solar panels and put them on the roof, but even so, today we can buy clean energy or renewable energy from our power company, without having to buy our own solar panel.
Here in San Francisco I don't own a car, but sometimes I need one, because I go to some meetings, seminars, which is far from here, it's on the Peninsula, and I need a car, what do I do? You can use the "Turo", "Zipcar", "Getaround" are applications that you rent the car for a few hours, someone owns these cars, and you use and return, this is so cool as it allows me not to own a car, which I don't really need, I can use public transportation and my bike, so I don't feel the need to have a car inside the city, yet I need a car in a few days, and I can have it in these situations, or library! Which is an old thing we can use, most of the books I read, or Bluray I rent, actually I go to the library and get it, and so I don't have to buy it,
only if i want to have, or collect, or have this kind of book, i will buy…
otherwise, I just go to the library, so we have the service…
We can extrapolate this to many things, so we should buy what we really need, and we have the second option is to buy something second hand at a thrift store, to buy something that has already been used, in fact I buy some things on Goodwill ( Thrift store) was perfect for me and is second hand.
Many years ago I was in Whistler, above Vancouver, Canada, and they have this little shop for people who come and go, they have a lot of students who go to summer break, or winter season to work, and they have this little shop with all the kitchen appliances, bedding, so people can go there and rent very cheap, and then they return to the store and so people don't have to be buying this equipment all the time, that would only be used by 3 months, this idea was great! I think this was back in 2009, they were already thinking this way,
If we get into this line of thinking, when we go shopping, if we really need this object all the time, if we can share, or if we can rent from somewhere or app, then we have to take care of less, keep less, and this is a way of thinking, and from now on we should think a little more this way.
What do you think of this? How could this be in your life? Do you think this would work for you? Why don't you tell me about your experience, tell me what you have been doing this way, sharing, renting… Having this unique experience, or buying something that is not new, share it with me!
Thank you for being here, thank you for sharing with your friends, your family, remember to subscribe to the channel and we will continue with our chat! Thank you! kiss! see you in the next video!
