A huge blast at a petrochemical plant in Texas has shaken homes more than 40 miles away, witnesses have reported.

The window-shattering explosion at the TPC plant in Port Neches “felt like a bomb” according to residents, who were woken at around 1am by the massive boom.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for “everyone within half a mile” of the burning building, fire officials announced.

This could extend to a larger area and residents are urged to monitor the situation as it develops.
