The president has postponed plans to procure military equipment because he recognizes South Korea as a "vital partner" of the Philippines, especially in the area of defense cooperation.
Duterte is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN-Republic of Korea commemorative summit scheduled for November 25 and 26 to mark the 30th anniversary of the partnership. "I hate traveling. I don't want to travel. That gives me headaches and everything, but this is important. You know, there are lots of things at stake. One of them is we buy weapons. Second is a lot of help (which) on the way, come," Duterte said at a press conference in Malacanang Tuesday night about his upcoming visit to Korea.
"Now, we buy a Corvette. What do you think? Corvette or corvey, or whatever, and buy weapons," he said, referring to a small warship built by Korea.
He noted that the country had previously obtained an FA50 fighter jet from South Korea, which was reportedly used by troops to fight against unlawful elements.
Seoul is our vital partner. You know that weapons are expensive now but we can always buy. "We got FA50 jets from them," he added.
The Ministry of National Defense (DND) recently struck a deal with Korean shipbuilders about the acquisition of two corvettes to help modernize the Philippine Navy. The Corvette Acquisition Project is estimated to reach P28 billion.
