Trump posthumously awards medal to 9|11 rescuer

Trump posthumously awards medal to 9|11 rescuer (8 Nov 2019) US President Donald Trump presented the Presidential Citizens Medal posthumously to Richard (Rick) Cyril Rescorla who helped save the lives of nearly 2,700 people at the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Rescorla ignored advice for people to remain in place as the Twin Towers were attacked and instead aided their efforts to escape to safety.

Authorities say he continued working to save lives until the tower collapsed, killing him and thousands more.

Rescorla's wife Susan accepted the award Thursday night at the White House.

The Presidential Citizens Medal was established by Executive Order 11494 on November 13, 1969, for the purpose of recognizing citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.

The Medal may be bestowed by the President upon any citizen of the United States at the sole discretion of the President.
