Battle Against Food Apartheid: Black Churches, Farmers Unite To Combat Food Deserts In Our Community Food deserts are areas in which residents are hard-pressed to find affordable, healthy food.

These Food deserts are most often found in poor, urban neighborhoods across the United States than contain few supermarkets or farmers markets. In these areas it's easier to find a Slurpee than a smoothie. It's cheaper to get a Big Mac meal than grab dinner at a salad bar.

The Black Church Food Security Network is looking to change the narrative and bring nutritious food into communities that suffer from food insecurity.

The organization is comprised of an association of congregations, farmers, food advocates, and community activists working together to create an alternative food system in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Pastor Heber Brown, the organization's founder spoke with #RolandMartinUnfiltered guest host Ray Baker about the battle to end food apartheid in the Black community.
