'Breaking up Christmas' by Tommy Jarrell, fiddle

'Breaking up Christmas' by Tommy Jarrell, fiddle "Breaking up Christmas" Tommy Jarrell (1901-1985) on fiddle at his home in Toast, N.C. in 1983. Brad Leftwich on banjo. A favorite tune in the Round Peak area, the name refers to the tradition of all-day dance parties for two weeks after Christmas. About the photo--Tommy was a responsible family man, driving a motor grader for the county until retirement, but in his youth he had been a moonshiner, as was his father, and it remained his drink of first choice. Tommy was as generous with his food and drink as he was with his music, but he always kept his white liquor under lock and key in his bedroom and did not divulge its source. Thanks to Paul Brown for identifying the other voices on the recording, Togie & Joe. Enthusiastic music loving friends of Tommy, they often stopped by to listen to music and were part of the local scene surrounding Tommy.
