The newest and largest offshore patrol boat (OPV) Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is now officially under state ownership after flying the Philippine flag for the first time on Thursday. In a Facebook post on Friday, PCG said the 83-meter BRP Gabriela Silang, built by the French shipbuilder OCEA, had a Flag Change Ceremony led by the Philippine Ambassador to France Ma. Theresa Lazaro.
"Ambassador Lazaro represented the DOTr (Department of Transportation) and PCG at the historic event, which marked the first time the OPV raised the national flag, and will now be under official ownership of the Republic of the Philippines," the post read.
OPV is scheduled to depart from France on December 30 with 35 personnel and crew from PCG and is expected to arrive in Manila on February 10, 2020.
Last month, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade approved the temporary acceptance of OPV through BRP Gabriela Silang, the upcoming commander, PCG Commander Alberto Ferre, in signing the ship's certificate in France.
BRP Gabriela Silang was assigned to PCG by DOTr. The design is based on OPV-270 Mk. II was first launched at Euronaval 2014.
The ship was also the first OPV to be acquired by the Philippines and the most modern ship from PCG.
