How Many English Teachers Abroad Kill Their Options in Business and Finance

How Many English Teachers Abroad Kill Their Options in Business and Finance My dad was an attorney and he used to have broke clients who would insist on not drafting a will. His line was "While you may not have any money today, what if you get hit by a Frito Lay truck crossing the street when you leave my office today? Wouldn't you like to have some say in how that legal settlement money is spent in your absence?"

Even if an English teacher has nothing today and has no immediate plan to return to their home country, I never recommend throwing out options. As a matter of fact, I keep every possible door open I can as long as I can that may eventually yield some sort of opportunity or pay off. If you neglect to keep your financial house in order (and that goes far beyond stacking abroad), you may find at some point in the future that you have shot yourself in the foot and wish you'd been smarter while teaching ESL abroad. This stuff I'm talking about is not amazingly hard to do and does not require an insane level of compliance, it just requires one to not be lazy and/or shiftless.

You see, planning for the future does not just depend on your current situation and your current net worth. It means you have to project well beyond and look at your *potential* future situation(s). This is one area that many English teachers neglect. I HIGHLY recommend staying in compliance, doing your taxes, and keeping your credit active. You may want to buy real estate in the future or start a business... you never know. It's relatively easy and just requires you to stay on top of it... and it can pay off in the end.
