Offering the Heel

Offering the Heel How cool is this. Hard work, patience, and countless repetitions pay off. We set up this training session for Blue with the specific intent to see if he would offer to sit by our side in the heel position without any verbal or nonverbal direction. No verbal commands or gestures were given to Blue to help him find the heel position. This was done specifically to get him to use his brain to find a position that will earn his reward.

This is not an easy task for you or your dog. It requires patience on your end along with countless repetitions of classically conditioning your dog in a specific position. At just over five months old blue is learning that he is in charge of his rewards.

When you get frustrated, take a breath, find your happy place, and let your dog find a way to earn its reward.
