In today’s episode, we are continuing to explore Amritsar’s street food scene, eating tons of AMAZING Punjabi specialties. And later in the episode, we are heading to the Indian / Pakistan border to watch the daily ceremony, and eat some delicious Pakistani food nearby.

We start the day at the Telephone Exchange, an area packed with street food. Our first stop is for Punjabi style poori, which is a deep fried puffy dough served with thick chana masala (chick pea gravy). Just nearby the Telephone Exchange, there was a stall serving a buttery paneer bhurji (scrambled cheese with onions, tomatoes and spices). Scooping the thick paneer chucks into the slice of bread is HEAVEN! Gaurav wanted to show us a famous and unknown stall that serves a RARE winter specialty, jaggery pudding. It was so good we all ate a few!

For lunch, we went to the famous Ashok Kumar Kulche Wala for a big plate of buttery kulcha (flatbread). This stall is packed with locals eating this Punjabi specialty right on the street. Watching them make the kulcha at all different stations was interesting to watch! The kulcha was served with a chutney and chana masala, and it was really SPICY!

Since Amritsar is very close to Pakistan (Wagah border) we decided to go watch the daily flag lowering ceremony between India and Pakistan. It was PACKED with people from all over India and the world! After the ceremony, we visited a restaurant called Sarhad (which translates to “border”) to try some Pakistani dishes. The concept of the restaurant is to promote peace, between India and Pakistan, through the love of food! We ordered chapli kebab (minced mutton kebab) and Lahori murgh (Pakistani style chicken). It was delicious and the owner was kind enough to show us the entire complex, which features Pakistani art pieces, clothing and furniture. If you want to visit any of these places yourself, check the info below:
