The German Air Force’s combat rescue team as part of NATO-mission Resolute Support The German Air Force’s combat rescue team is in Afghanistan for the first time. As part of the NATO mission Resolute Support , they are responsible for the rescue and return of personnel separated from other units. They are responsible for mission planning and tactical decisions in Personal Recovery assignments. The soldiers of the combat rescue team are official crew members of the CH-53 helicopter. During assignments, they can carry out tasks on board the CH53 , but can also be deployed independently on the ground or in other modes of transport (parachute, inflatable boats, quad bikes, motorcycles).

They ensure the protection, identification and safe return of isolated personnel.

The combat rescue teams also acquire basic medical qualifications to enable them to perform first medical measures on the spot before handing injured personnel over to medical specialists.
