Can students spearhead democratic reforms in Pakistan and India?
Film Screening followed by a panel discussion.

Hundreds of thousands of students have taken to the streets in India to protest the controversial ‘Citizenship Amendment Act’ recently passed by the Modi government. Just a month ago in Pakistan several thousand students took part in the massive Student Solidarity March held across the country. Interestingly the student protestors of both countries chanted verses of Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Habib Jalib, carried red flags and also gave space for minority groups within their ranks.

An screening of short film “Ushhaq ke Qafley” about the history of the democratic student movement in Pakistan, followed by a discussion on the present student movements of both Pakistan and India.

About the Panelists:

Beena Sarwar:
Beena Sarwar is an award-winning, multimedia journalist, editor, and filmmaker who has held senior editorial positions at print and television news outlets in Pakistan, including as founding editor of The News on Sunday in 1993, and as senior producer with the launch team of Geo TV in 2002. She has been the recipient of several international fellowships and teaches journalism at the undergraduate level in the USA. She regularly contributes reports and opinion many media outlets at home and abroad. She has also long been actively involved in movements for peace, democracy and human rights in Pakistan and the region.

Waqas Alam:
Waqas Aalam is a final year student of political science from KU. Member organizing committee Students Solidarity March. Deputy Organizer PRSF.

Zahabia:
Zahabia Khozema is a 23-year-old student political worker. She is the organiser of Progressive Students Federation Karachi. Being a part of Student Action Committee Sindh, she was one of the organisers of Students Solidarity March 2019. She has done a bachelors in Mass Communication from University of Karachi and is now doing a second bachelors in Fine Arts from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.
