Ferrari aims to entice new clients with Roma coupe (14 Nov 2019) LEAD IN

Ferrari has unveiled its latest sports coupe aimed at enticing new buyers and competing with the Porsche 911.

It's part of an overhaul of its model line up by 2022.

Ferrari 's new, easy-driving coupe dubbed Roma is aimed at buyers who have shied away from sports cars, as the luxury sportscar makers continues its ambitious model overhaul.

The new Ferrari Roma is the fifth new car launched by the luxury sportscar maker this year, and one of 15 to be rolled out through 2022 under an ambitious model overhaul.

"We started to introduce one simple but very important concept, which we called unpredictability,'' says commercial and marketing director Enrico Galliera. "We thought we were a little bit too ... predictable."

The Roma brings a sports-car sleekness in the more accessible Gran Turismo segment, and the SF90 Stradale, which is the carmaker's first production series plug-in hybrid , launched earlier this year.

Unveiled in the Italian capital, the car is designed "for people who would like to drive a sports car, or a Ferrari, but are a little bit afraid of Ferrari and sportscars," Galliera says.

"The SF90 is for pure Ferraristi. They are looking for the maximum performance without compromise. So we expect most of these cars to be delivered to existing customers," Galliera adds.

"The Roma is exactly the opposite position. It is designed in order to fill a segment ... that we believe will believe will attract an important number of new-to-Ferrari clients."

The Roma taps the romance of the iconic mid-front-engine grand touring Ferraris of the 1960s, combining it with a Gran Turismo luxury, comfort and drive-ability says Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari's Chief Design Officer

"We wanted to catch the spirit of these kind of cars that we're detecting the principles of the beauty and elegance in the 50s and the 60s. But we wanted to catch especially the coolness of this kind of cars. So in reality, there are no nostalgic elements on the shape of this. The car is very modern, sophisticated. I would say even futuristic for certain elements. Never nostalgic."

The two-seat-plus configuration gives the flexibility of two smaller backseats to squeeze in two passengers or extra luggage, while both the driver and front-seat passenger are encased in their own "cockpits" with state-of-the-art video displays.

With a less flashy customer in mind than the typical Ferrari red or Scuderia yellow, Ferrari has unveiled the Roma in blue-gray, titanium gray and white.

Buyers will have access to all of Ferrari's personalization options, one of the carmaker's luxury services.

The Roma will be priced at over 200,000 euros ($220,000), and the first deliveries will be made by summer next year.

Ferrari will produce about 10,000 cars this year, its highest level ever. Galliera says the luxury sportscar maker is not chasing volumes with the new Roma, despite its placement as a Ferrari entry car.
