Hundreds of thousands displaced by Somalia flooding

Hundreds of thousands displaced by Somalia flooding (1 Nov 2019) Flooding in Somalia has displaced more than 180,000 people, aid officials said Friday.

In the town of Beledweyne, rising waters forced the closure of the main hospital.

Aid workers fear the floods could lead to an outbreak of cholera and malaria.

"Help needs to come fast before it is too late," said local resident Mohamed Hassan, who's been forced from his home because of heavy rain.

The situation in Somalia is mirrored across East Africa, where more than a million people have been affected by flooding after higher than normal rainfall.

Parts of the region are bracing for a tropical storm, Kyarr, that could worsen an already dire humanitarian situation.

The rains in Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya are expected to continue for another four to six weeks.
