FDNY: RARE and ILLEGAL Forward Facing Blue Light on Battalion 9

In the state of New York forward-facing blue lights are illegal on police and fire vehicles. They may only be displayed to the rear. Forward-facing blue lights may ONLY be used by volunteer firefighters responding to a call, not by fire engines, fire trucks or officer vehicles. When FDNY wanted to display blue lights to the rear of their apparatus, a NEW LAW had to be enacted and signed by the governor. They didn't simply start putting blue lights on the back of their engines and trucks. This was back in 2010.

Here is Fire Department of New York FDNY Battalion 9 responding with a forward facing blue light. These sometimes sneak through production but are usually disabled in due course. We'll see what happens here. Read the law below.

New York Vehicle Laws 375.41.3.b

"In addition to the red and white lights authorized to be displayed pursuant to paragraph two of this subdivision, one or more blue lights or combination blue and red lights or combination blue, red and white lights may be affixed to a police vehicle, fire vehicle, ambulance, emergency ambulance service vehicle, and county emergency medical services vehicle provided that such blue light or lights shall be displayed on a police vehicle, fire vehicle, ambulance, emergency ambulance service vehicle, and county emergency medical services vehicle for REAR PROJECTION ONLY."
