The famous Broadmoor Hospital, which was once home to the Yorkshire Ripper, could soon be transformed into a luxury hotel. The red-brick building used to house a psychiatric unit where the likes of Peter Sutcliffe, Moors murderer Ian Brady and gangster Ronnie Kray had all stayed while detained under the Mental Health Act. In December, the hospital's current patients were moved to high-security hospital built in the Broadmoor grounds in Crowthorne, Berkshire. The old building will be up for sale within weeks and is expected to attract multi-million pound bids, the Mirror reports. The building, which dates back around 150 years, is owned by the West London NHS Trust, which aims to make an eight-figure sum to help towards a new £250m 'state of the art' hospital.' Upmarket hotel chains are reportedly being targeted ahead of the sale. Other parts of the larger site could also be turned into residential flats and football pitches. The old hospital, parts of which are Grade II listed, was declared “totally unfit for purpose” by the Care Quality Commission in 2009. Victorian Society director Christopher Costelloe said he supported a hotel conversion “in principle”. He added: “It’s no good if these old buildings are left empty because they just rot away.” A spokesman for West London NHS Trust said: "A range of potential uses have been identified, including commercial and residential. "Work on the marketing of the old site has not yet begun."
